Wine has some serious health benefits if consumed in moderation. It’s almost common knowledge these days that wine has a tremendous impact on lowering the risk of heart disease and stroke. However there are a few more surprising benefits that comes with drinking wine that I have explained in this video.
#1 Wine cures depression.
A study conducted in Spain analyzed almost 6,000 men and women over a 7-year period. The findings surprised the researchers as it revealed that those who drank moderate amounts of alcohol every week were less likely to suffer from depression. However more surprising was the fact the those who had wine as their major source of alcohol were found to have an even lower risk of depression. Even considering social and lifestyle factors such as marital, smoking and diet the results remained the same.
#2 Wine increases your lifespan.
This research was conducted at the very prestigious Harvard Medical school, and they reported that red wine has anti-aging properties. The substance in red wine resveratrol was the cause of these beneficial results, and can be found in the skins of the red grapes. Blueberries, cranberries and nuts are also sources of resveratrol.
The study revealed how resveratrol improved the health of mice and increased their lifespan. This was also the first compelling proof of the definite link between the anti-aging properties of resveratrol and the SIRT1 gene. The anti-aging properties of wine has been talked about for thousands of years and people have been convinced about this fact without actually being able to prove it. The reason is that resveratrol have the ability to keep blood vessels healthy, which eventually contributes to a longer, healthier life.
#3 Wine prevents dementia:
A study from Loyola University Medical Center proved that moderate intake of red wine can reduce the risk of developing dementia. The statistics collected showed a significantly lower risk of dementia among moderate red wine drinkers in 14 countries. Once again, resveratrol proved to be the cause because of its ability to keep blood vessels open and flexible, which helps maintain a solid blood supply to the brain.
#4 Wine prevents breakouts.
Wine can actually inhibit the growth of acne-causing bacteria and prevent breakouts more effectively than creams such as Benzoyl peroxide. However combine the two and the effect will work wonders for preventing acne, both short and long term. It has a much bigger impact on the skin if you consume it rather than if you apply it by a cream, and will also last for a longer period of time.
#5 Wine protects against colds.
Start sipping that red wine during the winter because studies shows it can potentially decrease the risk of catching a cold. The American Journal of Epidemiology collected data of the drinking habits of more than 4,000 people from five different Universities in Spain. They were all asked to record their cold symptoms throughout the year. The recordings were collected and the results were clear – people who consumed other types of alcohol or no alcohol at all were at a higher risk of catching colds. Red wine is rich in antioxidants which works to lower inflammation and reduce the immune response that leads to cold symptoms.
#6 Wine reduces the risk of prostate Cancer
Men who consumed an average of 4-7 glasses of red wine per week have a 52 % less chance of being diagnosed with prostate cancer compared to those who don’t drink wine according to Harvard men’s health watch. Red wine seems to be especially protective against advanced or aggressive cancers.
#7 Wine improves vision.
Resveratrol prevents out-of-control blood vessel growth in the eyes according to Washington University school of Medicine. This may help age-related degeneration and help you have a better vision for a longer time. However these studies have only been done with mice so far, but it’s still great discovery.
If you’re still watching this video, I’m gonna reward you with an extra surprising benefit that comes with moderate consumption of wine. It will actually protect your teeth and gums. The journal of Agricultural and food chemistry found that red wine has antimicrobial powers against bacteria that are known to cause decay, gum disease and tooth loss. They believe that the polyphenols and of course resveratrol are responsible for this.
Just to be clear, I’m not encouraging anyone to start chugging bottles of wine because “you’re gonna live forever now.” However I do think it could be beneficial to have one glass of wine 3-4 days a week, as long as you don’t overdo it. All the benefits will turn to disadvantages if you go past moderation. Use it as a relaxing way to finish of your day and reap the rewards.
