6 Health Benefits of Baking Soda –  Why You Should Use it Every Day

Baking soda is an absolute must have at home and it can be used both internally and externally for your own benefit. Baking soda, or sodium bicarbonate has been used as a remedy for ages, but has in recent history been replaced with more marketable and also more costly competition. Why charge 1 dollar for a box of baking soda that can be effective in many areas, when you can charge 50 dollars for a more marketable brand that can only be effective in one area, right? Before you run off to buy some expensive new pil on the market, let me tell you about 6 health benefits of baking soda.

Great for an upset stomach

Baking soda is an antacid and can neutralize the acid in the stomach which can be effective if you are having trouble with acid reflux. Only ¼ of a teaspoon baking soda mixed in a glass of water will be enough to soothe an upset stomach. This is because baking soda, much like apple cider vinegar, can alter the ph levels and it works incredibly quick. Be aware though because it might promote burping due to relieving gas and bloating which is a good thing.

And while you’re at it, add a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar for even more health benefits. The two have opposite ph balances so it’s perfectly fine to mix them and drink at the same time.



Great for skin

Using baking soda on your skin will promote this and old skin cells will be replaced by new healthy ones. This is because baking soda falls under the category of physical exfoliates, and the reason it’s so effective in promoting new healthy skin is simply because it physically removes the skin cells at the top layer through abrasive action. And because the powder is fine, yet hard, it will remove skin cells without causing excessive irritation.

While the baking soda can promote new healthy skin through the exfoliation, it will at the same time prevent skin conditions such as acne. Similar to balancing the ph levels in the stomach, it will also balance the skin’s ph levels and reduces the occurrence of skin breakouts.

Brightens teeth

It’s brilliant for making your teeth nice and shiny while removing plaque. Put a little bit of baking soda on your toothpaste and simply brush as you normally would for 2 minutes. Colgate states that baking soda can be found in many toothpastes and teeth-whitening products and that it does an excellent job at removing surface stains. However use it with caution and together with toothpaste to prevent damage to the enamel.

Forget about expensive deodorants, baking soda will neutralize mild to severe body odor. It absorbs moisture and sweat from the skin and reduces the odor while at the same time kills bacteria that give rise to the body odor. All you need is ⅛ of a teaspoon baking soda, about a tablespoon water and some essential oil. Mix it and use a cotton ball to rub it in areas where you tend to sweat.

Hair and dandruff

Baking soda can actually be incredibly effective for your hair, especially if you have oily hair. Oily hair are more prone to pick up pollutants and strong smells which can be an issue. This is where baking soda can be of rescue, because it can easily fix this problem. The baking soda will reduce the oiliness while, similarly to the deodorant, neutralize bad odor. That’s not all. The alkalinity in the baking soda will balance the ph levels of the scalp, reducing dandruff to keep it clean and healthy. Depending on how much hair you have, mix 1 part baking soda with 3 parts water and apply the mix to your hair and scalp. Wait 5 minutes before rinsing it. You can also add about 1 tablespoon to your regular shampoo bottle and wash it with that.

Get in your bathtub at a soothing temperature and dump half a cup of baking soda in there. Get in and stay in there for at least 10 minutes. You should let your skin air dry rather than using a towel. This will relieve the burnt areas quickly and effectively.
